What is event and event management?

We all have the experience of participating in various events. Sometimes, we find these events valuable and fun; sometimes, they are weak and dull. In response to the question, “What is the event?” We must say that an event means gathering a group of people with a specific purpose. For example, weddings include ngs, birthdays, political and economic negotiations, sports championship celebrations, or stargazing in the desert with amateur astronomers. NTS is very diverse, and we need event management and those who will take charge of its preparation and implementation for proper implementation. In this article, while introducing the types of events, we define event management and discuss the necessary skills and their prospects for a job.

What is an event?

Everything that happens in our lives is an event. But do you remember all the everyday events? We mean an event formed with a purpose and is remembered, an event that has an essential impact on your life. For example, a wedding ceremony is a memorable event. Graduation parties, company separation ceremonies, sports championships, and examples are all worth celebrating and remembering.

Types of events

A long list of events can be written. However, based on their purpose, they can be placed in several main categories. In the following section, we introduce these categories.

1. recreational

As the name suggests, the purpose of these events is to enjoy life together. They all fall into this category, from family to colleagues’ outings to the heart of nature or city recreation centers.

2. cultural and artistic

Cultural events include commemorating poets, writers, and famous people in their burial place or birthplace, holding religious and national ceremonies, and music concerts. Usually, large groups of people participate in these events. Therefore, these events are often public.

3. organizational

One or more organizations organize these events. The participants of these events participate in them for commercial, political, economic, and educational purposes. Political meetings, chambers of commerce, and educational conferences are among the categories.

4. Personal

The participants of these events are Fred and his acquaintances. They all fall into this category, from weekend parties to birthdays, weddings, funerals, and family anniversaries.

We can also name other event types if we change the category criteria. Sometimes, the event’s title is different from what happens inside it. For example, informal business negotiations may also take place in the middle of an entertainment event. All this depends on the complexity of human relationships and different situations.

What is event management?

Two people planning the event

Since an event’s implementation is not possible without planning, the most crucial goal of event management is to plan for its implementation. The event manager’s job is to hold events so the participants reach their goals. Various things must be done to organize any event properly. Event management seeks to structure these tasks and provide the necessary facilities to hold each one.

In general, management includes planning, organization, decision-making, coordination, and the correct use of human and non-human resources. Event management is no exception.

The necessity of event management

We humans are social creatures who cannot meet our needs and continue living without communication. Events are an excellent opportunity to meet these vital needs. We need events to:

  • Let’s celebrate successes and happiness and be happy.
  • Strengthen our solidarity and empathy with others.
  • Promote your business and find new customers.
  • Increase your knowledge.
  • Resolve differences and reduce tensions.
  • Find new job opportunities.
  • earn money

Of course, we often do not have the opportunity to manage the event. For example, do we want to manage the event at our wedding ceremony?! It is not possible to organize many events ourselves. For this reason, we need the event manager and his team to entrust the event-related matters to them.

What does an event manager do?

The event manager plans and executes the event for his client. The client may be a natural person or a legal entity (such as an organization). The tasks of the event manager can be summarized in the following list:

  1. Designing the framework and determining the overall goals of the event;
  2. Calculation of the necessary budget;
  3. Determining the right place to hold the event;
  4. Determining the type of audience of the event;
  5. advertising and information;
  6. coordination with service and support institutions and forces;
  7. monitoring the correct implementation of programs;
  8. Assessment.

What skills does the event manager need?

Someone managing the event

The bigger the event, the more specific skills the event manager must have to run it. Sometimes, the event is so big that an organization specializing in event management takes over its management. In any case, event managers should develop the following skills:

  • organizational skills;
  • Communication skills ;
  • accounting skills to calculate the budget and figure out the costs;
  • marketing and advertising skills;
  • Emotional Intelligence.

Along with these skills, the ability to work within a limited time frame, overcome stress, and solve immediate problems (the ability to make decisions in the moment) are also among the competencies of the event manager. The event manager must have sufficient specialized knowledge in his field of work and extensive general knowledge about the nature of the event. For example, if someone wants to know how to manage sports events and how he should conduct them, he should have enough information about all aspects of that sport.

The role of experience in developing event manager skills

Although project management, marketing, hospitality, and tourism studies provide the necessary knowledge, most of the skills required for an event manager are acquired through experience. Passing internships in event organizers is the best way to learn skills.

Hybrid event management

The coronavirus pandemic has caused the cancellation of many events around the world. Instead, virtual events such as webinars and video conferences flourished. Event management has also changed along with the world, and the concept of virtual event management has been formed. Today, after the pandemic, we see hybrid event management, a combination of in-person and virtual events. In this case, the event manager, while planning the in-person event, must run all or part of the event virtually. Most business, cultural, and scientific events today are held in combination so that the audience who cannot participate in the event for any reason can benefit from it.

Event management career prospects

Event management is a growing career. Due to urban life and diverse businesses and organizations, holding various events always requires planning and management. Therefore, those who work in this field are unlikely to remain unemployed. Currently, sectors such as business events, tourism-related events, and events such as weddings, funerals, and birthdays are among our country’s most prosperous business areas.
